the setting

Secluded in a forest including old Madrona, Fir, Cedar, and Cypress trees, and surrounded by new landscape, this setting embodies the spirit of wabi-sabi, the aesthetic philosophy from the 15th-century Japanese tea ceremony. Wabi-sabi finds beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and incompleteness. Wabi-sabi encourages a deeper connection to the present moment, fostering an appreciation for the quiet beauty and subtle elegance that can be found in everyday life and the natural world.

We designed the teahouse and gardens in the spirit of tea traditions practiced across time and cultures. Not solely limited to a religious or spiritual practice, tea rituals and customs around the world promote harmony, peace, insight, reflection, rejuvenation, refreshment, change, contentment, connection, and healing. Teahouses create the environment and ambience that invite us to exhale and unplug.

With its open floor plan, modular furniture arrangements, and a closed-in, glass walled porch, the teahouse space can be configured to suit a variety of purposes, such as individual retreat, couples adventure, or social gathering.

The architectural feature of the clerestory and the glass walls, doors, and windows on all sides create a light and airy feel that brings the outside inside. Lose yourself in nature as you gaze upon landscaped and forest views from every angle. These views, combined with the clean lines and minimalist aesthetic, make the teahouse an ideal place to exhale, laugh, and love.

Because of its proximity to a variety walks, hikes, and bike trails on beaches, along rivers, and deep in old-growth forests of the Olympic Mountains, you can enjoy the teahouse as a base for exploring. After an outdoor adventure like birding or observing sea life in the tide pools, you can return for a cozy, relaxing evening.

Take a day of rest and stay onsite. Lose yourself in a podcast, book, music, or video, or complete that work, art, or writing project. Enter a flow state, with a pot of soup simmering, as you let the Teahouse be your creative muse. Entertain yourself with games, books, and dialogues. Enjoy dining alfresco or lounging with a good book on the spacious patio, where you might encounter one of our resident deer or eagles. Listen to the birds’ serenade or the sound of the trees and “allow yourself to be absorbed by the wind” –Sufi Proverb.
